WHY CELLAR WINE?
Quite simply, the prime reason you collect wine is two fold - for pleasure or profit. Both constitute significant investments in time & money. Regardless of your own motivation, by cellaring your wine properly, you are protecting, preserving and improving a valuable investment.
an issue of taste
As wine ages, it develops unique differences in taste. For many people, nothing matches the pleasure of drinking vintage wine and experiencing these changes. However, vintage wine is rare and usually sold at a considerable premium. By collecting wine now, you are making a great investment into your wine drinking future.
Many people do not realise that storage conditions are vital to a wine’s future. A wine cellared in the correct conditions will not only last a great deal longer, but will develop gracefully, as the winemaker intended. A poorly cellared wine, regardless of its original quality, will develop prematurely or may not last at all.
a liquid investment
While it’s nice to enjoy vintage wine, it’s also reassuring to know your collection is a valuable asset. However, not all wines are suited to long term cellaring, and fewer still are effective investment wines. Before you begin to invest in any wines, it is vital to understand which wines you should buy and for what reasons. It’s also important to purchase wines with ‘provenance’; that is wines that have been stored correctly.
Finally, where you store your collection, will determine how well your investment performs. Any investors that don’t keep their wine at specialised facilities that offer certification are doing their wine and themselves a huge injustice.
